Donating #blood is not only an act of loving your neighbor… It's much more than that. By making this gesture, the donor can give hope of life and health to those who need it most: father, mother, brother, friend or even a person you have never seen.

Last week was my first time donating blood, and I will use 4 points to tell you why everyone should donate regardless any thoughts and the benefits you can provide from that.
1. What is blood donation
"Blood donation refers to the process of collecting, testing, preparing, and storing blood and its components, which the donors are generally volunteers."
The purpose of the blood collection and distribution system is to help ensure an adequate supply of blood for accident victims, people needing surgery, and people suffering from certain diseases, as well as for medical research.
2. Why it is extremely important
One single donation is capable to save up to 4 #lifes, and there is any substance that can substitute the blood. According to the article from the website scientific American, #Blood does many things, however, the artificial blood designed at the present time can only do two things: carry oxygen and carbon dioxide, and no substitutes have yet been invented that can replace the other vital functions of blood, that are coagulation and immune defense, being the real blood the #only option for transfusions.
3. There are no risks in donating blood

Many people are against blood donation because they think they can acquire #diseases or will not have enough blood after the process.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, there are no risks of donating blood. Sterile materials are used and discarded safely after one-time use on the donor. This is for the safety of the person who receives the blood, as well as the safety of the donor, and the staff collecting the blood.
Also, all donation candidates are submitted to a clinical #interview, where the donation criteria will be evaluated, according to current legislation of the Ministry of Health / National Health Surveillance Agency. I passed through this process before donating. Therefore, there is no risk of contracting any disease during the donation.
4. The religion behind the refusal of the blood donation
The Jehovah’s witnesses believe it is against God's will to receive blood and, therefore, they refuse blood transfusions often, even if it is their own blood.
According to Vicente Vera, from the website Zenit, they refuse the blood transfusion and donation following some of the bible verses, however, the blood transfusions did not exist in the time of the Old and the New Testaments, so there are no marks in the Bible about it.
“The correct reading of the Bible in the face of transfusions is that it is a purely medical practice, which the Bible and the Church have nothing to say, as it does not go against the natural morals or the positive law of God, being, in any case, a proper and necessary practice” - Vicente Vera.
Concluding, there are no reason for not donating blood, and specifically during this pandemic time, there are many people needing your help. Donate blood; Save lives.
