Matheus Teles, from Santos / Brazil, is an international student in the United States. He is studying Multimedia Journalism/Public Relations at Park University in Missouri, and is in his third year in the University. He tells us a little more about his major and his experience below.

What do you think about your major? Could you briefly describe it?
Matheus: “I really enjoy studying my major because it is something I always wanted to do. Since I was little, I always wanted to work with sports and also have contact directly with people during my work, so I decided to do multimedia journalism. Basically, in my major we have classes of journalistic writing, editing, ethics involving journalism and other aspects of the profession.”
How do you classify the level of difficulty of your major?
Matheus: “I wouldn't say that my course is a difficult one to do, but it is also not that easy. In order to be successful in the subjects, the student needs to strive, especially if you are an international student. Because English is not our native language, our level of attention must always be high so that there are no grammatical errors.”
What do you think about living on campus?
Matheus: “I have always lived on campus and I think this is very good. The person who lives on campus always has the company of other people who also live there, so no one is ever alone. Also, having a cafeteria in college helps a lot because I don't need to cook my own food.”
How about your university? The professors offer all help you need?
Matheus: “I think Park University is a good school, especially for international students. When I arrived in the USA in 2017, I didn't know anything about the country or what it would be like to live away from home, and I think that like many other people come to the US in the same situation as me, people are more open and help a lot.”
How is it for you to study with (another) international students?
Matheus: “I think that studying with other international students is really cool because I have known many cultures since I got there. I have friends from basically all the continents of the world and that makes me very happy because years ago I have never imagined I would be living and meeting as many different people as I know at the moment.”

Why did you chose Journalism?
Matheus: “I always wanted to work with soccer, whether playing or in another profession. Since I was a child, I have always watched many sports programs and I have always liked them all. So, I thought it would be cool to study journalism, so that one day I could work like the people I was watching on TV. That was a decision made a long time ago and it is something that I was always sure I would do.”
Where do you intend to work in the future?
Matheus: “My dream is to work in an organization that covers sports in general. Soccer is my greatest passion, but I also like other sports, and being a sports reporter would be something I would like to do as a career.”
Why did you decide to study in the USA?
Matheus: “I came to the United States to study through a athletic scholarship. Park sent me a proposal in order for me to play representing the university, and in exchange for that, I would receive the scholarship. The fact that I could continue playing soccer at a good level while studying was what most caught my attention and because of that I decided to study here.”
Have you ever had any problems out of your country? Specifically in the US.
Matheus: “I would say that the only problem I had outside Brazil was this semester. It wasn't a big problem, as I just had to renew my passport. However, I did not know the renewal process and the people working in the international student department also did not know much about the process and so I had to solve just about everything on my own.”
I would like to thank Matheus for the information. Much success to you!
